The Diversity & Social Justice Education office seeks funding for an intensive one-day social justice retreat designed to provide students with foundational knowledge and skills related to social justice, activism, and allyship.
This retreat will provide students with the opportunity to acquire and strengthen cultural competencies, awareness, and skills needed to engage in dialogue around difficult topics related to identity, privilege, oppression, and marginalization. This training will increase the visibility, skill, and effectiveness of student allies in the cause of social justice and campus civility as critical campus incidents arise. The training will be a peer-led training retreat facilitated by the DSJE student interns and guided by the DSJE pro staff.
Our goal is to have 30-40 students attend. Students who participate in this retreat will:
- Learn more about the experiences of historically underserved groups at the University of Illinois.
- Examine how one’s own positionality and advocacy can influence positive change in our campus climate.
- Build skills for working in collaborative, cross-cultural environments to help make a more inclusive Illinois.
